Ljubljana Old Town: Bridges, Dragons, and 2,000 Years of History
Ljubljana Old Town is one of the most charming historic centers in Europe—a car-free tangle of cobblestone streets, Baroque buildings, and riverside cafés wrapped around the green Ljubljanica River, with a castle watching from the hill above. It's small enough to cross on foot in minutes, but it's packed with stories.
Ljubljana Old Town grew up in the Middle Ages around three squares at the foot of Castle Hill. Before that, the Romans built a walled town called Emona here, until Attila the Hun swept through in 452 AD. Two big earthquakes, in 1511 and 1895, knocked much of the city down, and each time it came back in a new style—first Baroque, then Vienna Secession.
In the 1900s, architect Jože Plečnik gave it the bridges, market, and riverbanks that make it so special today.

THE THREE SQUARES OF LJUBLJANA OLD TOWN:
Old Square (Stari trg)—One of the city's three original town cores, dating back to the 13th century. Today it's lined with shops, cafés, and the Hercules Fountain.
Town Square (Mestni trg)—The heart of the Old Town, home to Ljubljana's Town Hall.
Upper Square (Gornji trg)—A quiet stretch of old houses climbing toward Castle Hill.
THE BRIDGES OF LJUBLJANA:
Cobblers' Bridge—A 13th-century crossing where butchers once had their booths, until the smell sent them packing and shoemakers moved in.
The Triple Bridge—Jože Plečnik turned one old bridge into three in 1929, and today it's the most famous spot in the city.
Butchers' Bridge—A modern bridge covered in love locks and strange bronze sculptures of Adam and Eve, Prometheus, and frogs.
Dragon Bridge—Opened in 1901 and guarded by four copper dragons, the symbol of Ljubljana.
The Fishmarket Footbridge—A glass-and-steel bridge with heated paving and one of the best photo views in town.

MORE TO SEE IN AND AROUND THE OLD TOWN:
Prešeren Square—The city's main meeting point, named for Slovenia's national poet.
The Central Market—Plečnik's riverside market halls, full of local produce, honey, and treats.
Saint Nicholas Cathedral—A Baroque cathedral with a green dome and rich frescoes.
Ljubljana Castle—A 900-year-old castle on the hill, reached by funicular or a short uphill walk.
TIPS FOR VISITING LJUBLJANA OLD TOWN:
Go car-free. Cars aren't allowed in the Old Town, so park on the edge and walk, or ride a free Kavalir electric vehicle.
Wear comfortable shoes. Many Old Town streets are cobblestone.
Come back at night. The bridges and riverbanks are beautiful when they're lit up.
Visit the market in the morning. The Central Market is busiest and freshest early in the day.
