Red Rock Canyon Sunset: Best Spots and Timing Tips Near Las Vegas
A Red Rock Canyon sunset is one of the most beautiful sights near Las Vegas. As the sun drops, the red and cream sandstone cliffs glow orange, pink, and gold, and the desert goes quiet. It's the perfect break from the noise of the Strip, just 17 miles away.
But there's a catch. The 13-mile Scenic Drive has a closing time, and in the winter months it closes right around sunset. With a little planning, you can catch the best light and still get out on time. Here's how.

TAKE A SELF-GUIDED TOUR OF RED ROCK CANYON:
Red Rock Canyon's Scenic Driving Tour is a self-guided GPS audio tour along the Scenic Drive, from the Visitor Center to Pine Creek.
Along the way you'll learn:
How old gray rock ended up on top of younger red sandstone
Where to find ancient rock art left by the Southern Paiute
Why miners hauled sandstone blocks all the way to San Francisco
How wild burros came to roam the canyon
The drive takes about 45 minutes without stopping.

KNOW THE SCENIC DRIVE HOURS FIRST:
The Scenic Drive is open from 6 a.m. until:
5 p.m. from November through February
7 p.m. in March and October
8 p.m. from April through September
In winter, the drive closes about the same time the sun sets, so you'll need to catch the golden light earlier. Plan to finish the loop and be heading out before closing time. From October through May, you'll also need a timed entry reservation for entry between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m.
BEST SPOTS FOR A RED ROCK CANYON SUNSET:
Calico Hills—The first stops on the Scenic Drive light up in warm red and cream as the sun lowers.
High Point Overlook—The highest point on the drive gives you big views over the whole canyon.
Red Rock Wash Overlook—Late on the drive, it's a good last stop before you exit.
Red Spring and Calico Basin—Just outside the fee area, the Red Spring Boardwalk is a great spot for evening light. Its hours match the Scenic Drive.

TIPS FOR YOUR SUNSET VISIT:
Check the sunset time. Compare it with the closing time on the day you visit.
Go for golden hour. The hour before sunset often has the best colors.
Give yourself time. The loop is one-way and 13 miles long at 35 mph, so don't wait until the last minute.
Bring layers and water. The desert cools off fast once the sun goes down.
Watch for wildlife. Burros and other animals are more active in the evening, so drive slowly.
