The historic Dock Street Theater, the oldest performance theater in the US and the building was originally built in 1734 as a theater.  Today it's a must see spot in Charleston and one of the stops on our haunted solo ghost walking tour.  

 

Unfortunately for the he Dock Street Theater it burnt down shortly after it was constructed and was rebuilt again as the Planter’s hotel.  The Planter’s was a hopping spot amongst the wealthily business men in Charleston.

 

The hotels popularity was mainly due to party atmosphere and the ladies of the night that frequented its halls.  The most beautiful and available were often present.  

 

Nettie Dickenson was one of those ladies of the night that often frequented the old Planter’s Inn. 

 

In her youth she was beautiful and a popular choice of the rich gentleman. But as she aged the tides turned.  The men no longer paid for her services.  And she was alone.

 

So, she did what any person with ghostly aspirations would do. She jumped from the balcony and plummeted to her death.  That's a fast track way to become a ghost here in the Holy City.  

And after her death she decided to stick around as a ghost and haunt the joint.  In 1937 the Dock street Theater once again opened its doors to the public.   And since its opening Nettie has been seen roaming the halls on the second floor in her hot red dress, which was her favorite attire for picking up the young and wealthy gentlemen of Charleston.  
 

Possibly her ghost is looking for new customers to pay for her company.   Or maybe she just haunts the the place for fun.
